The Modern Theatre Lobby Enhancement

Suffolk University, Boston, MA

The Lobby Enhancement entails a Sculpture and Mural Project. The first is a hanging abstract composition comprising a painted steel frame supporting salvaged and restored artifacts from the original theatre, interpreted recreations of historic signs, vintage movie posters from the Theatre’s early heyday as Boston’s first legitimate movie theatre, and non custom light fixtures for highlighting the features of the sculpture and giving sparkle to the whole. The second is a floor-to-ceiling wall graphic to be created from a photograph of the interior of the historic movie theatre, from which the artifacts in the Sculpture Project originated. Together, the effect is to dramatize the new Modern Theatre in the public realm of Washington Street, through a recall of the visual energy and excitement of the street during its earlier period as Boston’s hub of entertainment.
